What I Learned in 2nd Grade

Here are some things I learned from my Second Graders this school year:
They are honest about how they feel. If I ask ,”How are you today?” They will answer honestly. Now, what the honest answer is can be a little more than I want to know, but they will be honest.
They let things go pretty quickly.
They ask questions when they don’t understand. It doesn’t matter how simple the concept is, they are not afraid to look stupid or what your reaction to their question is. If they want to know, they will ask.
They are empathetic. They take time to assess the feelings of people around them. They can tell when I’m tired, or when one of their classmates is having an off day. They care about other people with no motives and they feel for each other, genuinely.
They laugh. They fully indulge when they feel happy. They giggle with excitement, they smile, they laugh and show how happy they are at any moment.
They compliment each other ALL THE TIME. It is so refreshing.
They show how much they love you. They draw pictures and makes things for you when they think about you and want nothing in return.
They are unapologetically themselves. They always do what makes them happy and offer no explanation for it.
They look forward to small, simple things like going to the park, going to get ice cream with their parents or just going to friend’s house.
They follow up/hold you accountable. If they were expecting me to bring something for them or do something, they will ask if I’ve done it. It makes me feel like I have no choice but to do what I said I would do because they count on me to keep my word.
As Adults, we can sometimes lose these simple qualities in life. We take on the world through the lenses of our own experiences. I have greatly benefited from their youthful innocence and pure intentions.
It has challenged me continue on my own journey to returing to the simple joys of the heart and truly loving the life I live. So, more walking on the beach, loving, laughing, fun, going to the park, silly faces, happy giggles and letting love permeate my life. I truly appreciate this feeling of joy.
I absolutely loved my little Second Graders this year. They taught me waaaaaaay more than I taught them.
Thanks for reading,
Lo
